From her first piece of jewelry which she gifted to her mother to the iconic jewelry pieces she received from her seven husbands during her lifetime, there is a story behind each of her gems.

Elizabeth’s fifth and sixth husband, Richard Burton (they were married and divorced twice), enjoyed bestowing extravagant gifts of jewelry to his wife and would use any excuse to surprise her with breathtaking gems. Many of the jewels purchased by Burton for Elizabeth were not only beautiful but were historically valuable as well. One of them was the magnificent natural ruby stone and diamond ring presented to her as a Christmas gift in 1968 during their trip to Switzerland. Richard once romantically promised Elizabeth that one day he will find her the perfect ruby in the world. After four years of search, he fulfilled his promise and gifted her the perfect Oval-cut Puertas Ruby of 8.24 carats, decorated with eight circular-cut diamonds mounted in 18KT gold ring, a popular 20th-century style.

The actress recalled the moment when she received the ring in her book. “I opened the box very, very slowly. Inside it glowed with the fire of the most perfect colored stone I had ever seen. With the most perfect cut. I am sure I almost fainted. I screamed, which probably echoed over the mountains, and I could not stop screaming. I knew I was staring at the most exquisite Ruby anyone had ever seen.”

She loved the Burmese gem and called her radiant gemstone a ‘true color’ and the most perfect ruby in the world. In one of her film Ash Wednesday, the Oscar-winner wore the Ruby ring with her multi-strand pearl necklace and bracelet set. The ring glowed brightly on her hand in the movie poster when she was holding the pearls to frame her face.

The ring was among the jewels in the Christie’s auction of The Collection of Elizabeth Taylor. Elizabeth Taylor’s ring was sold for an exorbitant amount of $4,226,500 which broke the world auction record for a ruby per carat and went on to become the most perfect ruby in the world.
