Alexandrite is a highly rare yet demanded gemstone. It is obtained mainly from Russia, India, and Brazil. However, Russian Alexandrite is the most valuable amongst the three mainly due to the fact that Alexandrite was first discovered in Russia and is named after a Russian monarch.
The Russian Alexandrite has a more vibrant green color, which somewhat resembles the green of an Emerald, and also has what is called a ‘true red’ color when seen under artificial light sources. In comparison to this, the Indian and Brazilian counterparts have a more peacock green tone to them, as well as a purplish-red hue instead of the true red. Apart from this, the color-shift phenomenon is more elaborately visible in Russian specimens in comparison to Indian and Brazilian alternatives. In addition to this, most Alexandrite mines in Russia are either closed or exhausted, making Russian Alexandrite an even rarer and higher-in-demand gemstone.
