What is Hallmark?

Hallmark is an official mark that is present on precious metals including gold, platinum, and silver. It is an authorized mark that is verified by the government for the purity of Gold. BIS Hallmark is an Indian Certification system that assures the quality of the jewelry. It is authentic proof by the Government of India certifying the purity of the gold metal. The BIS logo should always be present in pure Hallmark gold jewelry. So, if you have any doubt don’t forget to check for the BIS Hallmark logo on the gold jewelry.

How to check if your Gold jewelry’s hallmark is genuine?

Before purchasing gold jewelry, it becomes important to check the jewelry hallmarking. According to BIS, there are four components that determine the purity of gold. These are:

1. BIS Mark - Any gold jewelry which is BIS hallmarked will have the BIS logo indicating that its purity is verified in licensed laboratories. It is the only government-approved agency in India for hallmarking gold articles of any kind to ensure its purity.

2. Purity of Gold - The purity of Gold is indicated Karat (KT). 24KT is considered to be the purest form of gold and is quite soft to be converted into jewelry. Therefore, certain metals like silver and zinc are added to gold to convert into jewelry. Fineness Number is another factor that determines the purity of gold. It is measured in purity in parts per thousand. According to the World Gold Council, 24KT is 24/24 and can be refined to a fineness level of 999.9 parts per thousand. Similarly, 22KT gold is 22/24 and has a fineness level of 916 and 18K gold is 18/24 parts gold and has a fineness level of 750.

According to BIS, the hallmarking comes in six caratages, that is, 14KT, 18KT, 22KT, 23KT, 24KT.

3. Examining and Hallmarking Centre’s Mark and Number - The laboratory where the purity of gold jewelry is assessed puts their logo on the jewelry. 4. Jeweller’s Identification Mark - The jeweler’s store from where you will buy gold jewelry will also put its identification mark. The identification mark or number should be of a BIS certified jewellery or jewelry manufacturer.
