Opal Buyer Beware Guidelines
The quality of Opal gemstone can be determined based on certain factors. For a buyer, it is surely not an easy task to differentiate between a real Opal and a lab-created Opal stone. Natural, unheated Opal is usually more valuable (depending on other factors) than heated or chemically altered stones. Earrings customized with Lab-created Opals are often sold at cheaper prices but are neither worthy nor astrologically significant.
We at GemPundit have curated some of the key points that help the buyer to identify lab-created or Original Opal stones. Firstly, one must understand that treatment is any human-controlled process, beyond cutting and polishing that is commonly done to improve the appearance, durability, or value of the gemstone. Generally, gemstones undergo some kind of treatment or enhancement so one has to consider this as well. Enhancement and treatments not only add a new luster and shine to the gemstone but also keep it new forever.
Common treatments used for Opals are impregnation with oil, wax or plastic and also by surface modifications called sugar and smoke treatment. However, buyers need to understand that Markets are full of cheap sugar-smoke-treated and fracture-filled opals. Therefore, it is important to choose a trusted local dealer or online store to buy opal stone online at the best prices. Buyers should always ask for a report from a reputed Gemological Laboratory or a certificate that proves that the Opal stone is authentic. To identify the authenticity of the Opal, the customer can cross-check the report number on the Gem Lab certificate from the Gem Lab website or the company lab. If both the report numbers are alike, then it is an authentic Opal certification.
We provide a Gem Lab Certification for every gemstone we sell. This allows a buyer to confirm that the stone is real by cross-checking the certificate details directly from the Gem Laboratory. Go through our Gemstone Buying Guide to learn more about gemstones and what things should be kept in mind while buy opal gemstone.

Cleaning and Care
Opal has a hardness of 5 to 6.5 out of 10 on the Mohs scale and therefore, it should be handled with extreme care. Ultrasonic and high heat should be avoided in the case of Opal stone. Prevent any scratches on the surface of the gemstone by keeping it away from any sharp object. Normal cleaning is recommended, clean the Opal gemstone using mild soap and water, and then wipe it with a dry cloth.
Avoid soaking it in a soapy dish rather clean it with a professional polishing cloth only. Apart from cautious cleaning, careful storage is also very important for Opal stone. It should be kept separately from other stones to avoid any scratches caused by close contact between different jewelry items.
