When the world was in an eternal turmoil, and evil had conquered over the good, the Gods were shamelessly annihilated, and the universe lost hope of survival. Everything that existed, ceased to exist and every unimaginable adversity occurred.

At such a petrifying moment, the Gods decided to go for what could have been their last resort in defeating evil. Their powers amalgamated to create an entity full of raw energy, or Shakti, and she was called Durga.

Durga was a sign of hope, for both the Gods and the universe. If evil could be defeated at this time of urgency, it could have only been done by Durga. The Gods granted her their weaponry and worldly goods as a part of ammunition. And so, assuming the powers of the male Gods, she reared the lion she rode on, and took charge towards her purpose; to defeat evil, once and for all.

And so began the anticipated battle, between the demon-bull Mahishasura, and the only hope of survival, Durga. The fierce battle went on for 15 days, with both fighters changing shape to mislead the other. It ended when Durga used Lord Shiva’s Trishul to behead the demon-bull Mahishasura.

This conquer of good over evil is celebrated as Navratri, which goes on for 9 days. Each day commemorates a different manifestation of Durga, which represented different phases of a woman’s life.

How Durga Represents The Life of Every Woman

As Shailputri, she represents an infant girl and so on the manifestations go.

Brahmacharini, is the manifestation of Durga, where she is a young Parvati in her marriageable age, looking for courtship with Lord Shiva. After a long tapasya in devotion of Shiva, she is able to win him over and they get married.

The next manifestation is Skandamata, who carries infant Kartika (Skanda), representing a mother. When you worship Skandamata, you actually get blessed twice as Kartika on her lap is simultaneously worshipped, and you get the blessings of both. The evil Tarkasur could have only been defeated by Kartika because of Parvati’s magnificent upbringing, nurture and blessings. Surely, Parvati and Kartika’s relation was the epitome of mother-son relationship.

After Skandamata, Durga takes the form of Katyayani; a mother who steps up to help her son who is in trouble, followed by Kalratri; a woman who is ferocious as reaches menopause and undergoes bodily and hormonal changes. The second last manifestation is that of Mahagauri; a wise woman who counsels and guides everyone.

The last avatar Durga takes the form of, is Siddhidatri; a woman who has acquired all the siddhis (knowledge) in the world. This form is also called Saraswati, the Goddess of Wisdom and Arts. Saraswati possesses all the wisdom in the entire universe and grants her devotees spirituality and knowledge.

The current generation is thirsty for knowledge. All the technology that has been invented is either made for knowledge or to process knowledge.
