Ruby (Manik)

Ruby ('Manak' in Hindi) is a beautiful in red, brownish, purplish and pinkish shades gemstone variety of the mineral corundum. Ruby is the hardest gemstone with a Mohs index of 9.0 and specific gravity 4.0. It is mined in India ,Burma (Burmese) and a few other countries (See: Ruby Properties

In Western Astrology, Manak Gemstone is the birthstone for Capricorn (15 Jan - 14 Feb). In Indian Astrology, Manak strengthens Sun ('Surya') and is hence, the rashi ratna for Leo ('Simha'). Stone should be wear according to weight in carats or ratti. (Refer: Ruby Benefits

For astrological purpose, Old Burmese Ruby stone is considered best and should preferably be worn in Gold or Copper (we recommend a higher quality stone as opposed to spending money on Gold, if budget is tight).  For astrology purpose an unheated and untreated manak with  less internal inclusions, higher clarity and pure colour is considered best. For those on a tight budget, Indian Rubies can be worn, however, the clarity in these rubies is often far less.

Red Spinel, Rhodolite, and Rubilite are considered astrological substitutes for Ruby gemstone, but are said to have far less power.
